Pressure Sand Filter

Pressure Sand Filter

The most widely used technique for eliminating turbidity from water is the use of Pressure sand filters. Multiple layers of sand with varying sizes and specific gravities make up the Pressure Sand Filter. These filters are made to remove suspended particles and turbidity from supply water while minimizing pressure decrease. These filters are made specifically to meet the needs of the process. These filters come with face pipework, matching valves, and construction made of mild steel, FRP, or SS.

The components of the pressure sand filter are a vertical or horizontal pressure vessel, a set of frontal pipework and valves, layers of graded clay quartz sand supported by stone and rock layers in the under bed, a top distributor to distribute incoming water evenly throughout the filter’s cross-section, and an underdrain-down flow system to collect the filtered water consistently.

Working principle

The suspended garbage, which is handled by adding a coagulant like alum or poly electrolyte, is held on the sand surface and in the spaces between the sand grains just below the surface, while raw water flows downward through the filter bed. Over time, there is a gradual increase in the head loss, and when the pressure drop over the filter becomes too great, the flow decreases.

After that, the filter is removed from service, and flow reversal, also known as backwash, is used to clean the filter media. Sometimes air scouring via agitation through the under-drain system comes before the backwash operation to help clean the bed.

The sand gets mixed up by the air scratching, creating a scrubbing motion that breaks down the particles that were caught. It is now possible to resume using the filter.

Benefits of Pressure sand filter

  • better specific flow rate compared to regular down flow filters, requires low cost and space.
  • Very little upkeep is necessary
  • Lower the water requirement for backwashing
  • Plastic pipes are resistant to corrosion and don’t need to be maintained.
  • It is user-friendly and simple to operate multiport valve is operated by a single lever.
  • Options for Manual and Automatic Operation
  • Personalized dimensions and arrangements
  • Perfect for first treatment
  • Increased Specific Velocity
  • The filter can be backwashed with raw water.

 Applications of Pressure Sand Filter

  • It is widely utilized in potable water treatment side stream filtering.
  • It is perfect for purified water filtering.
  • Furthermore, it finds use in the filtration of chemical solutions and seawater. There are rubber-lined and epoxy-painted filters available for these kinds of filtering.
  • Pre-treatment to Reverse Osmosis System
  • Pretreatment of drinking water at hotels, shopping centers, and housing cooperatives
  • Housing Societies and Hotels’ Swimming Pool Filtration Systems
  • Pretreatment of burner feed and cooling towers
